CoreLab - Run a multi-centre medical trial

Created with LiveCode and supported by LiveCloud (https://livecloud.io) as a back end database, CoreLab was created to fulfil essential functions required for a multi-centre medical research trial.

This app allows us to keep track of all studies received by the core lab, the centres participating in the study with basic CRM, allows admins to administer the the cardiac imaging received and users to analyse these studies with ease. Using LiveCloud as a backend data store, the data is accessible from any location on any mac/pc and all data is synchronised withe cloud. Using LiveCode’s geometry manager the interface can cater for a wide variety of machines/screen resolutions with ease. LiveCloud facilitates secure login with secure ‘forgot password’ and ‘change password’ features. Broadly speaking the app is split into 4 interfaces: Admin interface (admin access only) - Administer all users - Administer all studies - Adding a study assigns a randomised ID for each stage - Keep track of all centre data with build in facility to email the designated contacts - Keep track which subjects have missing studies, incomplete or complete analyses with a simple color code in a data grid and quick filters for each. - Allocate studies to users, which keeping tally of how many studies are allocated to each reader - Designate studies for inter-observer analysis to be analysed by all readers

User interface (admin and user access) - Shows each user what studies are allocated for analysis - Easily filter ‘complete’, ‘in progress’ and ‘not started’ analyses, or search for a particular randomised ID Analysis interface (admin and user access) - Facilitate easy and standardised data entry (using point-and-click as much as possible) to track 35 variables to be filled in by each reader as quickly and easily as possible.

 - For example representing graphically a region of the heart and allocating a score, instead of filling in a digit between 1 and 4 for each of the 16 segments of the left ventricle.


Database interface (admin access only) - Import data and allocate randomised IDs as needed - Edit data in a tabular format and sync with cloud - Export data to TSV file or copy to TSV - Reset analyses or entire database CoreLab greatly simplifies and streamlines a number of tasks performed by the many people involved with this study and could be rapidly developed with LiveCode.

Co-ordinating Timezones

Pat M, known as 7Leven, is an intern at a company called ThoughtSTEM LLC in California. ThoughtSTEM is a company that for a while taught kids to program in the San Francisco area. They would use innovative and fun methods to teach the kids like helping them Mod in Minecraft. Currently, they are developing a video game by the name of CodeSpells. In the game the user, a wizard, uses code to make all their spells.
Pat helps run the forums, run contests for the forum users, and relays information to and from the users. There is also a monthly update where the users can talk to the developers over a live streaming service. 

There are many users from many different locations around the US and other countries. So keeping up with the time zones is difficult. As a result, he made an application with LiveCode that always has the correct timezone that correlates to the developers location. This application also counts down to the the time for the update livestream the application and opens the livestream in the user's default browser. 


The app connects to a MySQL database and gets the time of the update each month from that database. Pat created a second application that updates the database to which the users' applications connect.

Give the Power to Arrest

This electronic version of the training course "Power to Arrest" from the Department of Consumer Affairs of the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services of the State of California was created using LiveCode by Alejandro Tejada Capellan for Franco Security Consulting Group.



This training course provides the minimum standards of instruction for security personnel. It is a self-instructional course designed to educate the trainee to carry out his or her duties with caution and within the confines of law.



Completing successfully this course is necessary to obtain the Security Guard's Registration Card, required for a person to serve the functions of a security guard or patrol person. This course is intended to be a learning experience as well as a guide to understanding.

Spend time with your patients not entering data

Peter M Brigham, a psychiatrist, used LiveCode to reduce the time he spent entering data into a web-based system and, as a result, spend more time concentrating on his patients.

I'll let Peter tell his story. "Our group practice recently had to change to an electronic medical record and I had to stop using the LiveCode-based practice management tool I had been developing and using for 20 years. The new software is web-based, and extremely cumbersome and frustrating. I put together a little utility to facilitate writing notes that is being used especially by the other psychiatrists and prescribers in the practice. It allows storage and easy access to snippets of text, and provides a shortcut for writing certain prescriptions. It took me under 2 hours in LiveCode to get the basic functionality written, and then another few hours to clean up the interface, handle details like text fonts and opening and closing routines, and write a help text. It then took 5 minutes to turn it into a standalone for Windows and post it for others to use. I had it done before the end of the first week the new software was rolled out."

Develop a web aggregator

Scott McDonald developed the LiveCode Super Site to simplify finding the latest questions and answers about LiveCode. He was able to quickly write a simple "screen scraping" stack on his Windows 7 laptop that gets information from the web from Stack Overflow, Use-LiveCode mailing list and the RunRev Forums. He then turned it into a standalone application, built for OS X, and runs it on his Mac Mini media server. After processing the data every hour (which is straightforward with the string processing capabilities built into LiveCode), his app uploads the refreshed html pages via ftp to the server hosting the site. Scott enters the blog entries by hand, but said "if the number of LiveCode related blogs increases I will automate that part too!"

Create icons

Jan Schenkel developed IconBadger using LiveCode is an in-house utility for his colleague user experience designers. The company had purchased a large set of icons, but they were still missing some for their flagship application. Thanks to Jan's tool, they can now quickly create additional icons by combining database 'table' icons and function 'badge' symbols.

Teach calculus

A now retired City Colleges of Chicago Distinguished Professor of Mathematics, A. N. DiVito, Ph.D, developed PointPlots in LiveCode. It's a pedagogical program for teaching pre-calculus through Calculus II mathematics (polygons, relations, functions, curve sketching, inverse function theory, polar coordinates, parametric equations, secant and tangent lines, Taylor Series, arbitrary and regular Riemann Sums, etc.).

Create tools to improve department efficiency

Roger Eller created a toolbar simply named "Toolz". He loaded it up with various LiveCode apps which he built to help his colleagues automate tasks which could result in typos, like renaming files.  One of his Toolz allowed them to overlay a transparent protractor on top of artwork to verify printing angle specifications. Using LiveCode, he was able to make Toolz that really helped his department get stuff done, both correctly and with increased efficiency.

A few years ago Scott Rossi created an impressive video of his work. Scott creates images with graphic design apps and then brings them to life with LiveCode. So when you see one of Scott's UIs working in the video it is all down to LiveCode.


The credits mention Runtime Revolution, it is the former name of LiveCode.

Help a non-programmer create a kiosk app


Roger Eller told me the story of how, with the assistance of LiveCode, he helped a colleague who had no programming experience create a touch screen kiosk application. I'll let Roger relate the story.

"In 2001, I assisted a colleague who had only an idea. We set out to make a prototype of his idea for a touch-screen based kiosk for tracking printing plate materials. My friend had zero programming background, but was able to design his interface (from his idea) using an early version of LiveCode. Then we sat down and scripted the buttons and choices to make it functional."



"When the idea was proven (around 2002 I think), he built the final version mostly by himself, with some scripting advice from myself. We found a touch-screen monitor with Windows drivers, and delivered a touch screen kiosk system that is still in use today (12 years later). Go LiveCode!!!!"

Learn Japanese verbs

A while ago, Alan Stenhouse made a series of apps for learning the many forms of Japanese verbs in LiveCode*. They followed a new learning method created by Paul Knight, a professor of Japanese in New Zealand. The apps provide a number of exercises which can be followed, including audio playback, saving for revision and random ordering, as well as a dictionary and articles illustrating some interesting aspect of Japanese life and culture.


* Alan originally developed the Apps with Hypercard and found it very easy to keep them alive by moving them to LiveCode.

Build a correlation coefficient tutorial

Ronald Zeller built this interactive app in LiveCode so that his students could explore correlation coefficients. It illustrates sample positive, negative and neutral correlations.  When the students select various functions it displays the statistics contributing to the correlation values and a plot of the various data sets with a best-fit line.   Students can drag data points to new locations on the chart and then recalculate the values to observe the effect.  They can also create a new data set of their own and then calculate and plot that data to further explore the principles.  When they are ready they can take an exit quiz which submits performance data via a server-based SQL database. 




Note: The plot points appear larger than normal to allow selecting and dragging on an iPad.
